KUCHING: The Friends of Sarawak Museum (FOSM) will present a captivating public talk, “Archaeology at Niah: Past Lives and Future Prospects,” by Dr. Franca Cole.
With more than 30 years of experience in the field, Dr. Franca Cole is a distinguished conservator and archaeologist, specializing in material culture research and collections.
“This event promises to be an eye-opening journey into the ancient history of Niah National Park, located in the southwest of Miri, Sarawak,” FOSM said in a statement.
This public talk will be held at Borneo Cultures Museum Auditorium on November 19 at 2.00 pm. It promises to unveil the secrets of Niah’s past and is open to all those intrigued by history, archaeology and the preservation of cultural heritage.
Niah National Park is renowned for its mesmerizing limestone caves, which have captured the imagination of explorers and scientists alike. Among the notable artifacts found in the park is the intriguing ‘Deep Skull,’ currently on display at the Borneo Cultures Museum.
The park’s significance goes beyond its natural beauty; it has earned a place on the UNESCO World Heritage ‘tentative’ list and is celebrated for its rich archaeological heritage.
Over the span of 140 years, exhaustive excavations have unveiled an astounding revelation – Niah has been a hub of human activity for over 50,000 years.
“But what activities took place within these ancient caves, and what stories do the artifacts and remnants tell about the people who once called Niah home? Moreover, how do these archaeological findings impact Sarawak in the present day?,”
