KUCHING: Members of the public will have a rare opportunity to explore the origins of Kayan social order and spiritual heritage on December 8 (this Saturday), as Friends of Sarawak Museum (FoSM) hosts its December public talk.

Co-organised with the Kayan Association Sarawak (Kuching), the talk titled ‘Imun Ajo’ and the Birth of Kayan Social Order’ will take place from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm at Dewan Kuliah A, Batu Lintang Teachers’ Training Institute here.

Admission is free.

FoSM said the session will delve into the significance of Imun Ajo’, a sacred bronze figure central to Adat Kian, the traditional circle dance, and chant performed by dayung (shamans) during the Dange harvest festival.

The speaker, Dora Jok, who heads the Orang Ulu Research Section at the Council for Native Customs and Traditions, will explain how the figure is believed to embody the last of the “first men”, linking Proto-Kayan ancestry to the foundations of Kayan social structures.

Dora, who hails from Long Bemang, has extensive experience in heritage and conservation work, having served with Angkatan Zaman Mansang (AZAM) Sarawak, WWF-Malaysia, and the Sarawak Museum Department before assuming her current role.

Her research continues to focus on Kayan culture and traditional knowledge frameworks.

The event will also feature a cultural performance by the Kayan Association Sarawak (Kuching), providing attendees with a closer look at living Kayan traditions.

The public is encouraged to attend. For inquiries, contact fosm.talks@gmail.com.
