Public tip-off leads to five arrests in ‘Ops Sapu’

LAWAS: A public tip-off led to a late-night enforcement operation that resulted in the arrest of five foreign men for suspected immigration offences.

The operation, dubbed ‘Ops Sapu’, was carried out by the Lawas Immigration Enforcement Division at an unnumbered shared house in Kampung Long Sebangang Asal at around 11.30pm last Thursday (Jan 15).

The team moved in to address reports of foreigners believed to be in violation of immigration laws.

Five foreign men were inspected during the operation, with further checks discovering that they were suspected of offences under the Immigration Act 1959/63 (Amendment 2002).

All of them were subsequently arrested to facilitate investigations and further action under the existing legal provisions.

The Sarawak Immigration Department said they remain committed to strengthening enforcement efforts and enhancing monitoring from time to time.

The department also expressed appreciation for public cooperation, while noting that community vigilance plays a crucial role in safeguarding national security, sovereignty and well-being of local residents.
