MIRI: Thirty-eight foreigners of various nationalities were rounded up in a major immigration sweep across the city on Wednesday (Sept 10).
Acting on a string of public tip-offs, the Sarawak Immigration Department mounted five coordinated operations codenamed ‘Ops Sapu’, ‘Ops Selera’, ‘Ops Belanja’, ‘Ops Mahir’, and ‘Ops Gegar’.
The joint operation with the Sarawak Labour Department saw enforcement teams swooping in on 18 targeted locations.
A total of 107 individuals were screened and of the figure, 38 — comprising 16 men and 22 women — were arrested for overstaying and failing to produce valid travel or work documents.
The foreign detainees are being investigated under Section 6(1)(c) and Section 15(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63.
The department assured that stern actions will be taken against those who break the law by hiring or harbouring undocumented migrants.
Members of the public have been urged to cooperate by reporting any such illegal activities to the department for further action.
