THE Ministry of Transport (MOTS) is forging ahead with its ambitious plan to revolutionise the state’s public transport sector through various modernisation initiatives.

Its Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin said this includes the planning and development of an integrated Intelligent Transport System (ITS) to improve service coordination, operational efficiency and the overall passenger travel experience.

“While the planning, development and integration of this system is still in the early stages, my ministry has already initiated practical steps to modernise the public transport network.

“Since the launch of the 14 units of smart stage bus services in October 2024 in Miri, this initiative has received an overwhelming positive response from the public and has accumulated 455,068 riderships within six months,” he said.

He said in his ministerial winding-up speech at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting here on Monday.

He added that his ministry is actively supporting the implementation of the Stage Bus Service Transformation (SBST) project, also known as BAS.MY, by the Ministry of Transport Malaysia through the Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board (CVLB) Sarawak to enhance public transport and reduce traffic congestion.

“Since it began on Mar 5, the project has recorded 34,860 passengers on five out of ten routes now running in Kuching.

“These routes are Taman Malihah, King Centre, Bako, Bau and Serian. Recently, a sixth route to Kampung Benuk started operating on May 22.

“For a fixed rate of RM50 monthly for MyBas50 transit pass, passengers can enjoy unlimited rides on BAS.MY Kuching buses,” he added.
