BINTULU: Police have urged the public not to speculate or circulate unverified information regarding a fatal road accident at Paragon traffic lights, Jalan Sultan Iskandar here, as it could cause unnecessary concern within the community.

Bintulu Police Chief, Superintendent Nixon Joshua Ali, said the case is currently being investigated under Section 44(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

The incident, which occurred at around 11.30 pm last night, involved a Toyota Hilux four-wheel drive, driven by a Chinese national believed to be under the influence of alcohol.

“The vehicle is reported to have rear-ended a Proton Saga at the traffic light junction,” he said in a statement today.

As a result of the severe impact, two rear-seat passengers in the Proton Saga – a man and a woman – were pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel from Bintulu Hospital.

The deceased were identified as Yiu Siew Lee, 34, and Janam Ampar, 44.

Meanwhile, the driver and a female front-seat passenger sustained serious injuries and were referred to Bintulu Hospital for further treatment.

Nixon confirmed that the driver of the Hilux has been detained to assist with the investigation.

He also urged eyewitnesses or anyone with relevant information to contact the investigating officer, Inspector Pung Ting Khang, at the Bintulu Traffic Police Station via 086-338575, or the Bintulu District Police Headquarters operations room at 086-318304.
