KUCHING: The Sarawak Petroleum Product Agents Association (SPPAA) has reaffirmed its support for government efforts to ensure that subsidised RON95 petrol is strictly reserved for Malaysians.
Its president Laura Hartini Maurice said the association, which represents petrol station retailers across the state, has put in place various compliance measures including clear visible pump stickers, warning signage and trained personnel to prevent the sale of RON95 fuel to foreign-registered vehicles.
“We understand the public concern about ensuring subsidies reach the right people. Our members are committed to compliance and work closely with the authorities to uphold the rules,” she said in a statement.
She added that viral social media posts showing alleged violations were sometimes circulated without full context, leading to misconceptions that enforcement or retailers were not doing their part.
“While social media can be helpful in raising awareness, constructive action is more effective than viral posting,” she said.
Laura also encouraged members of the public who witnessed suspected violations to alert station staff or contact the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) directly to enable prompt enforcement.
“Simply filming and posting videos online often does not resolve the situation and may create unnecessary public misunderstanding,” she said.
She also said self-service and cashless transactions posed challenges in preventing misuse, as foreign vehicles could refuel without cashier interaction.
“Despite this, member stations are committed to upholding compliance measures and welcome enforcement support from the authorities.
“Everyone has a role to play – retailers by ensuring compliance, authorities by enforcing fairly, and the public by reporting responsibly.
“Together, we can protect fuel subsidies, maintain public confidence and ensure fair treatment for all,” she said, while calling for continued collaboration between retailers, authorities and the public to maintain transparency and public trust.
