SIBU: The Pulau Li Hua Waterfront, venue for the Sibu International Powerboat Race (SIPBR) 2025, has the potential to become a leading international water sports hub, says Sibu Resident Abang Mohamad Porkan Abang Budiman.
He said that with proper facility development, Sibu could position itself on the global water sports map and strengthen its reputation as a center for tourism and international sporting events.
“We have started a tradition, and I am confident the Sibu International Powerboat Race will continue to grow into a world-class event, driving tourism, boosting the economy, and nurturing Malaysian champions in water sports.”
Abang Mohamad Porkan made these remarks in his speech during the SIPBR2025 closing ceremony at Pulau Li Hua Waterfront on Sunday (April 27).
He said the success of SIPBR2025 proved that Sibu is not just a small town but a vibrant, united community with significant potential for national and international development.
He noted the notable economic benefits, particularly for community tourism, local businesses, and small entrepreneurs.
“Local products, heritage cuisine, and handicrafts gained wider exposure, creating more opportunities for residents to grow.”
Beyond economic gains, he said the event fostered a strong spirit of sportsmanship and strengthened ties among communities of diverse backgrounds.
He also extended his appreciation to all who contributed to the event’s success.
SIPBR2025, organised by the Sibu Divisional Tourism Task Group (DTTG) with strategic support from the Pulau Li Hua Recreation Sports Club and the Pulau Li Hua Village Development and Security Committee (JKKK), was held from April 25 to 27.
The event brought together 262 powerboats across various categories, including participants from neighbouring Brunei, and attracted thousands of spectators from within and beyond Sibu.
