KOTA PADAWAN: The Bidayuh community has been urged to seize the opportunity to pursue higher education at institutions of higher learning (IPT) in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

Education, Innovation and Talent Development Minister Datuk Seri Roland Sagah said this is in line with the needs of Sarawak’s new economic development, which focuses on green technology, digitalisation and environmental sustainability.

“The times have changed. Sarawak is now focusing on the green economy, environmental sustainability and digitalisation.

“Therefore, Bidayuh youths must move forward and venture into STEM fields so as not to be left behind,” he said.

He said this in his speech while representing Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, at the 2025 Padawan Sub-District Level Pre-Gawai Dinner held at Dewan Gunasama Asah Bratan, here on Sunday (May 18).

Sagah also emphasised the importance of mastering the English language as it is the global language of knowledge and communication in the world of science.

“I want our community to know and understand that speaking English is not about showing off. It is a necessity.

“We must teach our children and grandchildren because it is the world’s lingua franca,” he stressed.

He added that the Sarawak government will be offering full scholarships next year to students pursuing undergraduate studies in science at institutions such as Swinburne University of Technology, Curtin University Malaysia, University of Technology Sarawak (UTS), and i-CATS University College.

However, he noted that non-science fields such as accounting, finance, law, and psychology are also important in supporting the state’s new economic ecosystem.

“For example, psychology is very important to ensure the mental well-being of society, especially as we enter a more challenging, technology-based era of work,” he added.

He also called on the entire Bidayuh community to support the younger generation in bravely facing future challenges and transforming the community’s future through knowledge, skills and self-confidence.
