KUCHING: Negotiations on the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) will continue regardless of political developments at the federal level, including the possibility of an early general election, said Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Law, MA63, State-Federal Relations), Datuk Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali.
She stressed that Sarawak’s efforts to reclaim its rights under the agreement would remain in place, despite the potential impact of political uncertainty in Peninsular Malaysia on MA63 negotiations.
“Negotiations on MA63 will continue regardless of who forms the federal government. This is our ongoing effort to restore Sarawak’s rights, and we will continue fighting for them whether there is an election or not.
“This has always been our commitment, and the struggle is far from over. We will persist in ensuring that the rights and entitlements we seek under MA63 are returned to Sarawak,” she said to reporters during the Pesta Samariang 2026 event at Kampung Sungai Bedil Besar here today (June 13).
She acknowledged that implementing the provisions of MA63 is not a simple process and will take time but expressed confidence that the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) government would remain committed to the cause.
“We will continue to ensure that our demands are met. It will take time, but as long as the GPS government remains in power, we will continue to champion MA63,” she said.
On another note, Sharifah said that the state is still awaiting further developments on the proposal to increase the number of state seats.
“We are still waiting, but we hope the delineation exercise can be expedited so that the proposed additional 17 state seats can be realised as soon as possible,” she said.
