KOTA PADAWAN: Clients of the Narcotics Addiction Rehabilitation Centre (PUSPEN) Kuching have the opportunity to transform their lives by becoming state athletes in upcoming sports events hosted in Sarawak.
Minister of Youth, Sports, and Entrepreneur Development Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah believes that the clients possess immense potential in sports, which can be nurtured during their rehabilitation.
“Sarawak will be hosting various international sporting events, including the Borneo Games and the 2027 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games.
“We need athletes who are determined to rise above challenges, and I see individuals here with the potential to become champions in certain sports,” he said.
He made these remarks during a breaking-of-fast ceremony with PUSPEN Kuching residents on Tuesday (March 4).
Abdul Karim, who is also the chairman of the Malaysian Drug Prevention Association (PEMADAM) Sarawak, emphasised that the training and skills provided at the rehabilitation centre should be fully utilised to help clients reintegrate into society and generate income.
“There are many opportunities for transformation here, whether in carpentry, cooking, weaving, or other valuable skills.
“When you leave this place, you can use these skills to earn a living or contribute to the community,” he said.
He also expressed hope that PUSPEN clients would play a role in Sarawak’s development once they complete their rehabilitation.
“Sarawak is progressing rapidly, both in administration and economy.
“We need skilled workers to drive our economy forward, and we do not want our young people to be left behind due to social issues.
“Never see yourself as someone who cannot change. At the end of the day, self-identity and determination matter the most,” he added.
