BELADIN: Authorities have been urged to take stern action against illegal online gambling activities, especially in villages, under the guise of business premises.
Beting Maro assemblyman Razaili Gapor said the illegal activity had contributed to the increase in crime and other social problems in the community.
“Who is the perpetrator, where does it happen, when does it happen, we know… so it’s easy to be prevented (gambling back then).
“However, today gambling activities are not visible. Sometimes, individuals are seen sitting in coffee shops, but they are gambling by just staring at a smartphone…all at their fingertips.
“Such a scenario is very dangerous and I urge those responsible to act more decisively because online gambling activities are really damaging the nation,” he said during a meeting with government agencies and community leaders here recently.
Razaili said if online gambling activities were left unaddressed, they could become a cancer in society, causing not only self-harm but also harm to family institutions, society and the nation.
“Therefore, more aggressive efforts to combat online gambling activities should be taken. We do not need irresponsible parties like the gambling operators.
“Online gambling activities should be eradicated completely in this area because we do not want the community to be destroyed.”
Razaili also called on all parties to utilise digital technology for the purpose of good and self-improvement, instead of misusing it.
