KUCHING: The transferring of infrastructure projects such as renovation of schools and poor clinics under the supervision of Public Works Department (PWD) to other departments or district officers, will allow the department to focus more on complex projects.

Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said the department could focus more on implementing complex infrastructure projects such as the construction of hospitals, schools, big bridges, ports, highways, among others.

“With the transfer, it allows client ministries to carry out minor infrastructure projects, such as repairing schools, clinics, drains, fences, that would not involve complex technical and construction safety aspects.

“The transfer is in line with the Treasury Instructions 182, which states that the Ministry/Department/Agency may perform maintenance works to repair minor damage that does not involve building structures or electrical works worth less than RM200,000,” he said in a statement yesterday.

Nanta added the implementation of these projects would also consider the capabilities of the ministry, department or agency concerned.

“The Ministry would like to express its gratitude to the Prime Minister and hopes that the projects involved can be implemented smoothly for the benefit of Malaysians,” he said.

Earlier, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said minor infrastructure projects such as repairs of dilapidated schools currently under the Public Works Department’s (JKR) supervision will be transferred to other departments or the district office.

“I have discussed with Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi, that projects on repairs to dilapidated schools, clinics and toilets should no longer burden PWD, which has a huge responsibility.

“Transfer these jobs to other departments or the district office,” Anwar said.
