KUCHING: Tabung Baitulmal Sarawak (TBS) has introduced a new method for Zakat Fitrah payment through QR code in collaboration with Bank Islam Malaysia Berhad (BIMB), providing an alternative to cash transactions for Amil Zakat Fitrah here.

TBS general manager Datuk Abg Mohd Shibli Abg Mohd Nailie said the initiative aims to facilitate a safer and more efficient payment process.

“The benefit of this application is that it will facilitate our processes and make it easier for the zakat collectors (Amil). However, we have not yet implemented this system in all areas—this is a pilot model. If it proves successful, we will extend it further,” he said.

He said this during a press conference at the Amil Zakat Fitrah Kuching Division briefing and workshop, held at the Sarawak Islamic Complex yesterday, where the QR-Code BIMB Zakat Fitrah payment method was officially launched.

“The QR code system will be used exclusively in Kuching this year before being expanded across Sarawak in 2026. The collaboration with BIMB supports the government’s efforts to promote a cashless society,” he added.

BIMB East Malaysia regional director Kameri Edi expressed appreciation for the partnership, stating that it enhances the accessibility and convenience of zakat payments for the public.

“Additionally, TBS received a business zakat payment of RM509,262.00 from TM Technology Services,” he said.

The payment was presented by TM Sarawak general manager Abdul Rahman Taha to Datuk Abg Mohd Shibli

As of January 2025, TBS has distributed RM8.30 million to eligible asnaf (underprivileged) under four main programmes which are Strengthening Knowledge Traditions, Developing Islamic Institutions, Enhancing Ummah Welfare, and Skills Enhancement Programmes.

Also present were TBS deputy general manager Bolhassan Iskandar Taibi, TBS Head of Finance and Administration Sulaiman Mahili, BIMB East Malaysia Regional Director Kameri Edi, and BIMB Head of Cash Management Channel Implementation Unit Jasarudin Sahak.
