KUCHING: Chess players of all ages and playing abilities will have the chance to compete for more than RM3,300 in prize money when the Queen & King Gambit 2026 takes place at Kuching Sentral on August 22.
Kuching Chess Association’s (PCBK) President, Chuang Kuang Hong, said the tournament aims to encourage greater community participation in chess while promoting sportsmanship and strategic thinking.
“The event will feature separate King and Queen categories, with participation capped at the first 100 players in each division, and registration is priced at RM20,” he said.
Chuang also expressed appreciation to Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian for his continued support of chess development in Kuching through a grant to the association.
“The contribution is more than financial assistance. It serves as a strong motivation for us to continue organising quality chess programmes and building a stronger chess ecosystem in Sarawak,” he said.
The association also welcomed companies, organisations, government agencies and individuals to support the tournament as sponsors or strategic partners in developing young chess talent in the state.
