SIBU: Swift actions by longhouse residents managed to prevent Rumah Bajai at Jalan KJD from being consumed by a major fire on Saturday.

The Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) said that firefighters from Sibu Jaya station were dispatched to the scene, about 24km away, after receiving a distress call at 5.05 pm.

Firefighters from Kanowit station were also deployed to the scene to assist in the extinguishing operation.

However, upon arrival, they found the fire had already been put out by the residents using four fire extinguishers.

The team confirmed that the fire involved a mattress and a fan, and caused 15 per cent damages to the bedroom.

No necessary operation was needed as the team only monitored the situation to ensure that there is no risk of reignition.

Once the situation was deemed safe, the team ended the operation at 5.47 pm.
