MIRI: The rabies outbreak here is under control and no new cases were reported thus far, said Miri Natural Disaster Management Committee chairman Mastapa Julaihi.

Mastapa, who is also Miri Resident, said rabies surveillance was occasionally conducted by Miri Health Office together with Miri Hospital.

“There are no new cases reported in this division, and we are in a state of full preparedness,” he said when contacted yesterday.

He opined that the Veterinary Services Department and the local councils were working together to mitigate any new occurrences.

However, he advised the general public to take preventative measures to avoid being bitten by dogs.

Recently, the State Disaster Management Committee proposed a special operation to remove stray dogs from public areas, after seven people were bitten by the animal at Kuching’s Reservoir Park.
