KUCHING: The Car Free Morning programme, held on the first and third Sunday of every month, took on a festive atmosphere today as participants dressed in traditional baju Melayu and baju kurung to celebrate Hari Raya Aidilfitri in the heart of the city.

The event, organised by Dewan Bandaraya Kuching Utara (DBKU), and officiated by Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department (Project Coordinator for Regional Development Agencies, Kuching North City Commission and Islamic Affairs), Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi, saw people of all ages taking part in cycling, jogging and community activities with a cultural twist.

“Car Free Morning has become more than just a recreational event.

“It is a platform that strengthens social ties among our diverse communities in Kuching,” Dr Abdul Rahman said.

He added that the programme has successfully encouraged public participation in low-carbon, environmentally friendly activities by limiting motorised traffic in selected areas from 6.00 am to 10.00 am.

“This is part of our ongoing effort to improve air quality and promote environmental sustainability in urban areas.

“Even within a short time frame, reducing carbon emissions from vehicles can have a meaningful impact,” he said.

Dr Abdul Rahman also called for similar programmes to be introduced in towns and cities across Sarawak to support the state’s goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions in the future.

“We encourage incorporating cultural elements whenever the event coincides with major festivals.

“Today, in conjunction with Hari Raya, we witnessed people celebrating in traditional attire while taking part in healthy activities,” he said.

According to him, future editions could also coincide with other key festivals, such as Gawai Dayak, Chinese New Year and Christmas, to highlight Sarawak’s commitment to unity in diversity.

“This reflects one of the core values of Sarawak, strengthening harmony and mutual respect among our multicultural society,” he added.
