KUCHING: The Functional Literacy Education (PLF) and Adult Literacy Education for Skills (LEADS) classes conducted by the Department of Community Development (Kemas) can be further improved with information technology (IT).

Deputy Minister of Women, Childhood and Community Development Mohamad Razi Sitam said there should be no limits to enhancing PLF and LEADS classes.

He believes if Kemas can implement it, it will enhance the knowledge acquired by participants.

“Not only will they master the 3Rs, which are reading, writing, and arithmetic, but also basic IT skills.

“For me, there’s no problem if the 3Rs are supplemented with IT elements, I think it’s a good idea.

“At the same time, educators can also use more advanced teaching methods. That’s the best,” he said to reporters after the graduation ceremony for the PLF and LEADS classes at the Kemas Betong Division here today.

He emphasised that it is time to transform the programme introduced more than six decades ago.

Kemas currently has separate programmes specifically for IT at the Kemas Activity Centre (PKK).

“Anyone can join. So, you can come to PKK to attend the short courses they organise,” he said.

Razi stressed that there are many benefits to mastering IT well, especially as today’s world demands the use of advanced technology.

The ceremony involved 76 PLF and LEADS participants who had completed their studies.

Razi hoped that PLF and LEADS classes can continue so that the government’s target of achieving zero illiteracy can be realised.

Kemas Betong Division Officer Jeffry Lana, Debak Sub District Office head Muhammad Hafiz Kepli, and Betong Division Temenggong Pi’ee Alwi were also present.
