KUCHING: Efforts to promote the five R’s of sustainability took centre stage when the Regional Centre of Expertise Kuching (RCE) participated in the Kuching Duo Market event here.

The five R’s – Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Repurpose, and Recycle formed the core of the RCE’s  initiative during the event on May 1-3 at The Hills Shopping Mall to raise community awareness and encourage proactive action towards sustainable environmental development.

Visitors are guided through various quilling techniques step by step.

RCE Kuching Student Affairs representative Sherene Amelia said the booth offered educational information on the Sustainable Environmental Development from the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

“We are acknowledged by the United Nations University Institute for the Advanced Study of Sustainability, and we have been actively promoting awareness about the SDG, particularly number four, which is quality education,” she said.

She added that the initiative is a part of the Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) from UCSI University, where they educate youth, students and also the public by providing a variety of sustainable workshop initiatives.

In an effort to raise sustainable literacy, they offered a quilling workshop for RM2, giving visitors an opportunity of first hand experience on recycling efforts at this event.

“We introduced quilling, which is a craft you can make from recycled paper, magazines, newsletter, and even brochures.

“It is also more fun when you use certain pages of a magazine, particularly the colourful ones,” she added.

Other than that, they also hosted a quiz on the SDG trivia wheel to test visitors’ knowledge about the goals.

Their active workshops on raising sustainability awareness encouraged visitors to adopt practical habits, promoting more mindful waste management.
