KUCHING: Books can shape a person’s thinking, character and sense of identity while also serving as an important medium for broadening readers’ knowledge, experiences and perspectives on various aspects of life.
Deputy Dean (Research and Postgraduate Studies) of UCSI University Professor Dr Hamedi Mohd Adnan said an individual’s knowledge would increase through extensive reading.
He added that a person’s thinking, outlook and knowledge would broaden and expand through frequent reading compared with those who read less.
“The benefits gained from the habit of reading can have a significant positive impact on a person’s life.
“Reading plays a major role in shaping individuals because the knowledge gained from books can influence the way a person thinks and acts.
“So, I believe that you are what you read,” he said when interviewed by Sarawak Tribune at the Grand Margherita Hotel on Thursday (Aug 27).
Elaborating, he said books were no longer available only in physical form as readers could access reading materials online through various digital devices.
He explained that reading materials were now more easily accessible and could be utilised by the public in line with technological developments without relying entirely on printed copies.
“There is no denying that books have evolved alongside technological development.
“Reading materials are no longer limited to physical forms but can also be accessed online to provide readers with opportunities to make use of their leisure time.”
