KUCHING: Parents are urged not to use smartphones or tablets as rewards for children, as doing so can weaken self-control and contribute to early dependence on digital devices.

Tadika Johan headmistress, Johanal Wong Ai Lin, said uncontrolled gadget use at a young age can disrupt emotional and social development, reducing opportunities for real-world interaction and exploration.

“Technology has its place, but young children are not mature enough to regulate themselves. When electronic devices become constant rewards, they become overly reliant on them,” she said during the Tadika Johan Graduation and Annual Concert 2025 at the Borneo Cultures Museum recently.

Johanal encouraged parents to prioritise activities that support healthy growth, such as reading, movement, communication and hands-on exploration.

“The real world is their true classroom,” she stressed.

She added that, since the kindergarten’s establishment 22 years ago, its early childhood education did not focus solely on academic achievement.

“We have believed that character is a child’s greatest strength. Academic results may change, interests may shift, but values like kindness, responsibility, perseverance and manners stay with them for life,” she said.

Johanal also highlighted the importance of strong collaboration between parents and teachers in shaping confident and courteous children.

“Education is a shared responsibility. Teachers instil good manners and the spirit of giving back at school, while parents cultivate respect and gratitude at home.

“When both sides complement each other, children grow up in an environment filled with love and support,” she said.

She also noted that the kindergarten’s annual performance stage is a meaningful space for children to build courage and self-confidence.

“Every child deserves to be seen and appreciated. The stage teaches them to face an audience, overcome fear, and discover their own strengths,” she added.

Also present was Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) Chairman, Tan Kai.
