KUCHING: Real-world exposure is essential for students pursuing journalism.

In this instance Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) lecturers are convinced students can gain such exposure through media outlets like Suara Sarawak and Sarawak Tribune.

Thirteen UNIMAS students recently completed their internship at Suara Sarawak and Sarawak Tribune, where they gained first-hand experience in a professional newsroom environment.

The lecturers said the partnership with the two media companies has opened new doors for students to develop industry-relevant skills and discover their potential beyond classroom learning.

“Interning at Suara Sarawak is different because of how the company invests in students,” said lecturer Dr Noratikah Mohamad Ashari from the Faculty of Education, Language and Communication.

She made these observations following a farewell ceremony for the trainees held at the media outlet’s office last Friday (June 6).

Noratikah added that the internship allowed students to grow personally by offering them constant opportunities to be better and to explore beyond the textbook.

“They gained valuable, hands-on experience beyond the classroom, which helped them find their voice and build confidence,” she said.

She said the environment at Suara Sarawak provided both room and opportunity for learning, making it an ideal ground for practical growth.

She also hoped students would continue reading actively, as it sharpens their thinking and improves their writing skills.

Another lecturer, Dr Jamilah Maliki, said students were encouraged to pursue journalism internships because strategic communication is deeply rooted in media and writing.

She explained that students had already learned the theory, and internships offered the chance to apply it.

Jamilah added that it is the perfect time for students to see journalism in action, and gain meaningful experience.

“This is how we bridge knowledge into practice.

“The experience that they get here will shape them into more diplomatic individuals who can express themselves better,” she said

She believes that in university the students are nurtured, and during internships they truly bloom.
