KUCHING: Hotels hosting Ramadan buffets in the city have been urged to review their pricing to ensure it remains reasonable for customers.

Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Project Coordinator for Regional Development Agencies, Kuching North City Commission and Islamic Affairs) Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi said the trend of high fees for buka puasa events has been influenced by practices in larger cities such as Kuala Lumpur.

“In Kuching, most of our customers are local residents.

“I suggest hotel operators review their Ramadan Buffets pricing. For customers who eat lightly, high charges may not be worthwhile.

“We worry that customers might eventually stop attending Ramadan buffets if prices are too high. Therefore, reasonable pricing is recommended.”

He said this when met by reporters after officiating the Sarawak Islamic Council Contributions to Mosques, Surau and Islamic Burial Grounds presentation ceremony at Dewan Kompleks Islam Sarawak here on Wednesday (Feb 4).

He also reminded that the Sarawak Islamic Religious Department (JAIS) has issued a circular stating that only food premises with a Malaysia Halal Certificate are allowed to use the term Ramadan Buffet throughout this year’s Ramadan.

He added that traders are not permitted to display posters, billboards or similar advertisements related to buffet offers without JAIS’ approval.

“Therefore, we suggest that traders notify the Sarawak Islamic Council (MIS) first if they wish to hold a Ramadan Buffet. We will ensure they have a halal certificate before offering such service. So far, some have already obtained approval.”

Regarding Ramadan bazaars, Dr Abdul Rahman said the Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) does not prevent the public from trading outside the bazaars provided by the commission during Ramadan.

“The food operators are only advised, as usual, to maintain cleanliness at their respective spots, arrange their stalls appropriately so as not to block roads or occupy parking spaces.

“Additionally, they are required to ensure the undergo health inspections and obtain health certificates from the Health Department.”
