A proposal to rebuild Rejang Park Market is currently in progress, as announced by Datuk Michael Tiang Ming Tee, the Deputy Minister for Public Health, Housing, and Local Government. He mentioned that the initial plan was to renovate and upgrade the market with a budget of RM750,000.
“However, after several discussions with the Sibu Municipal Council (SMC), we realized that simply renovating and upgrading the market would not be sufficient,” he said.
Tiang made these remarks when he spoke to reporters after conducting a final inspection of drainage repairs and maintenance at Lorong Rejang Park 4 on Wednesday (Nov 27).
Drawing inspiration from the newly reconstructed Sungai Merah Market, the Pelawan assemblyman emphasized that rebuilding the market would not only lead to a new building but also attract more visitors and introduce a new business model.
“We have been inspired by the success of the Sungai Merah Market. We believe it’s a great idea to apply a similar transformation to the Rejang Park Market.
“Our aim is to completely dismantle the existing structure and rebuild it from the ground up,” Tiang added.
Tiang stressed that the new market could incorporate additional features and be constructed taller.
“Why taller? I suggested to SMC that we should adopt a Hong Kong or Singapore approach, making the most of limited land. Even with a small land area, we can optimize its use by building upwards and adding more features,” he explained.
Furthermore, he highlighted that with a new, more attractive market, they could create a space that would attract crowds not only in the morning but throughout the day and evening.
“At present, after the morning session, Rejang Park Market is almost deserted with little activity. However, observing the new Sungai Merah Market, even at 8 pm, it is still bustling with customers. This fresh business model is rejuvenating the area.
“We aim to bring that same vibrancy to Rejang Park, generating new economic opportunities, transforming the area, and addressing the parking issues,” Tiang added.
He mentioned that they are currently awaiting proposals from consultants to progress with the project.
Regarding the drainage project, he stated that the project, with a total cost of RM30,000, was completed four months ahead of schedule.
Tiang explained that the upgrading works included deepening the drain, repairing the collapsed drain, and constructing pavement along the drain for the convenience of the residents.
“My goal is to continue upgrading the drainage system in each Rejang Park lane. Please bear with me as I gradually enhance all the back lanes, and soon Rejang Park will experience fewer instances of flash floods,” he concluded.
