BINTULU: A recreational fishing boat suspected of operating without a valid licence was seized by the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) during a patrol on the evening of April 19.

Captain Muhammad Suffian Eldine Abdullah, director of the Bintulu Maritime Zone, reported that the maritime enforcement officers were conducting a special operation named ‘OP TIRIS 3.0’ as part of their ongoing initiative, ‘Operasi Khas Pagar Laut 1/2025’, when they intercepted a white boat attempting to sail out to sea.

The detained crew members were escorted to the Bintulu Maritime Zone Vessel Detention Centre.

Initial inspections revealed that the vessel was manned by a local captain and a crew member, both aged 26 and 21 respectively.

Upon examination, the boat was found to be in violation of Section 474 (1) of the Merchant Shipping Ordinance (MSO) 1952, as it failed to present a Boat License and other relevant documents during the check.

If convicted, the individuals involved in operating the boat could face fines or penalties.

The boat and its crew were subsequently detained and escorted to the Bintulu Maritime Zone Vessel Detention Centre before being handed over to Malaysian Maritime enforcement officers for further investigation.

Members of the public are encouraged to report any suspicious activities or incidents via the emergency hotline 999 or contact the Bintulu Maritime Operations Centre at 086-314 254.
