KUCHING: Public recreational parks, regardless of their size, must be upgraded and improved, said Datuk Wee Hong Seng.

The Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor said this is to ensure that everyone has access to quality outdoor facilities for leisure and relaxation.

“At the moment, we are looking into upgrading all the recreational parks under our council, and we are going to install smart lighting too.

“And of course we are planning to upgrade them and turn them into a community space so that the recreational parks can be for multi-purpose usage.

“Not only for gatherings, but also for various situations such as vaccination programmes, he said when met by reporters after attending the MBKS’s Chinese New Year (CNY) gathering at MBKS building today.

At the same time, he also hoped that the basic facilities within the recreational parks can be upgraded.

“Improving basic facilities like restrooms is crucial, especially for those who frequent the parks for jogging or other activities, ensuring their comfort and convenience during their visits.

“If the space is big enough, we hope that it can be used for community events, and foster friendship around the neighbourhood,” he said.

He also said the next park that MBKS will be upgrading would be the Hui Sing Park, right after the Kenyalang Park.

“Taking proactive steps, we are gearing up to submit a proposal to the federal government, seeking funding to upgrade our park facilities.

“This initiative underscores our commitment to enhance public spaces for the well-being and enjoyment of our community.” he added.

For the record, there are 195 parks under the MBKS jurisdiction.
