KOTA SAMARAHAN: Education graduates who meet subject requirement needs will be given priority in the recruitment of 20,000 Grade DG9 Education Service Officers (PPP) on a contract of service (CoS) basis in Sarawak.
Sarawak Education Director, Omar Mahli, said every education graduate has an opportunity, but it depends on the state’s current needs.
“We need to understand that at present, the state requires teachers for subjects such as Bahasa Melayu, Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), and others.
“Therefore, we will prioritise graduates who meet these requirements first. Other subject options may already be full, so recruitment has not yet been carried out,” he added.
“However, Suruhanjaya Perkhidmatan Pendidikan (SPP) continuously conducts recruitment from time to time based on needs, so opportunities are always there – it is only a matter of sooner or later.”
Omar said this when met by reporters after officiating the opening ceremony of the Sarawak Islamic Education and Arabic Language Convention (SCIEDAL) 2026 at the Pusat Islam Tun Abang Salahuddin (PITAS), Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas), here today (Feb 13).
He also assured that the graduates concerned would be absorbed once their subject options are required in the future.
Elaborating further, he explained that there is always a need for teacher supply as some retire compulsorily or opt for early retirement each year.
“The same applies to teachers from outside Sarawak… they will return to their home states once they have completed their required service period,” Omar said.
“So, there is always a cycle. However, at present, the supply of teachers remains sufficient.”
At the same time, Omar welcomed the decision by the Ministry of Education (MOE) to increase the supply by 20,000 teachers for next year.
“We do need teachers (in the state), but only in certain numbers. The need is still there, but it is not as critical as in previous years,” he said.
