This World Toilet Day, The Spring Shopping Mall, Kuching, highlights how clean, safe, and well-designed washrooms can enhance everyday experiences. With touchless fixtures, modern amenities, and premium scents, the mall’s upgraded toilets show that hygiene and comfort matter, proving that even public washrooms can reflect care, innovation, and respect for visitors.

Luxury Meets Hygiene

THE Spring Shopping Mall, Kuching, has always aimed to ensure its visitors feel a sense of luxury when shopping. With its recent renovations and revamps, the mall highlights its reshaping process as part of a bigger commitment: elevating everyday experiences into something a little more refined, a little more comfortable, and unmistakably The Spring. From its refreshed interiors to its thoughtfully upgraded facilities, the mall isn’t just changing how it looks – it’s redefining how visitors feel the moment they step inside.

The same can be said for its washrooms, as the mall upgrades its toilets to enhance the visitor experience and maintain its position as a leading shopping, dining, and leisure destination. Their focus is on comfort, design, and technology.

Hence, this World Toilet Day, Sarawak Tribune had the chance to visit the newly renovated washrooms, both premium and free, to understand how the latest innovations are integrated into everyday loo visits.

“For the mall, our goals when it comes to our restrooms are to have a clean, well-maintained facility that sets the standard for hygiene, encourages responsible practices among visitors, and reflects our commitment to providing a safe and healthy environment,” said the mall’s Management Operations Manager, Hii Yu Hsiang.

Beyond functionality, the mall has also used the space to introduce touch-free technologies and premium amenities that educate and inspire better hygiene habits.

Innovation meets the loo

When the mall’s washrooms were designed, many aspects were taken into consideration. The design itself was inspired by nature, with calming tones, soft lighting, and a thoughtful use of space to create a relaxing environment.

“During the redesign process, we considered accessibility for all abilities, efficient use of space, and the overall comfort and convenience of our users. We also considered hygiene, durability, and modern technology to ensure a safe, clean, and pleasant experience for everyone,” said Hii.

The new and improved washrooms are equipped with water-saving systems, sensor-activated soap dispensers, bidets, and air dryers, as well as touchless fixtures to help reduce germs. In each cubicle, the flush valves are sensor-activated too, offering a touch-free experience for users.

“We’ve also included amenities like baby changing rooms and sanitary disposal bins, all within a modern and comfortable space to make the experience as pleasant as possible for our visitors.”

Regular check-up

At the mall’s high-traffic toilets, cleaning and sanitisation are carried out every hour, with regular checks to top up soap, toilet paper, and paper towels. In addition, a thorough deep cleaning and disinfection is conducted at least once a day. Under the housekeeping department, attendants are trained to follow strict hygiene protocols and detailed cleaning schedules to ensure that standards are consistently maintained, he added.

“To maintain hygiene throughout the day, we have several measures in place. High-touch areas like sensors, handles, and seats are regularly sanitised, while hand sanitiser and soap dispensers are available at every basin. Trash cans and paper towel dispensers are touchless, and our ventilation systems help reduce odours and bacteria. For added safety, air purifiers are installed in baby rooms, and dedicated staff washrooms support thorough hygiene practices,” Hii revealed.

Meanwhile, the premium washroom is not without a sense of luxury. The mall previously collaborated with L’Occitane to display their signature scents and amenities, such as soaps and hand moisturisers, in the space. Now, scents from Rituals grace the corners of their premium washrooms, elevating the experience to a more enjoyable and relaxing one for visitors.

As World Toilet Day reminds us, access to clean, safe, and dignified sanitation isn’t a luxury – it’s a basic human right. The Spring’s newly upgraded washrooms may seem like just another facility to the hurried shopper, but they represent something deeper: a conscious effort to value hygiene, comfort, and human wellbeing in the simplest moments of daily life.

By redefining what a public washroom can be, the mall not only raises the bar for visitor experience but also highlights the importance of thoughtful design, responsible habits, and respect for the people who keep these spaces running. In the end, a clean toilet benefits everyone – and The Spring shows that even small, unseen corners of a mall can lead the way.
