KUCHING: The iconic Kuching Pet Walk 2.0 is coming back again next year in April, and the organiser has added a new 5 kilometre (5KM) walk category.

Pertubuhan Komuniti Progresif Kuching (PKPK) chairman, Ryan Jee Kouk Hiong said, “After the overwhelming success of this year’s Pet Walk 2025, which saw 850 enthusiastic participants and 159 pet owners joining the fun, PKPK together with Sarawak Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SSPCA) are collaborating to hold a bigger event with the beloved animal-lovers’ community.”

The second edition of the Kuching Pet Walk will take place on April 26, 2026, marking a new milestone for what organisers hope will become an iconic annual event for the city and possibly the largest pet-friendly run in Malaysia.

This year’s event featured a 3KM route for participants with or without pets, but based on public feedback, the 2026 edition will introduce a new 5KM category for runners seeking a greater challenge.

“This event is not just about running or walking— it’s about engagement, education, and creating a healthier, more compassionate community, and we hope it grows into one of the biggest pet and family events in Sarawak or probably Malaysia.

“As for the additional 5KM run, some participants said 3KM was too short for a running event, so next year, we’re expanding the distance to include a 5KM run to attract more participants and fitness enthusiasts,” said Jee.

He also added that registration for the event in April 2026, is now open, with an attractive early bird promotion running until November 15, 2025.

Early bird registration fees for 3KM and 5KM (with pets) are priced at RM45 (for t-shirt and medal); RM35 (for t-shirt only) and RM25 (for medal only), whereas without pet category— for the 3KM and 5KM are at RM40 (for t-shirt and medal); RM30 (t-shirt only) and RM20 (medal only).

After the early bird promotion expires, the registration will revert to its normal price (with pet for 3KM) priced at RM55 inclusive t-shirt and medal; RM45 (t-shirt only) and RM35 (medal only).

Meanwhile, for the 3KM and 5KM (without pets) registration is at RM50 (t-shirt and medal); RM40 (t-shirt only) and RM30 (medal only).

The expiry date for registration is on March 23, 2026.

The event is proudly supported by Kuching South City Council (MBKS) and the Sarawak Veterinary Department, City Jogger’s Club, Malaysia Red Crescent Kuching Branch, People’s Volunteer Corps (Rela).

The event’s main sponsor, International Marketing Management Sdn Bhd, is committed to ensuring a safe and well-coordinated event for both participants and their furry companions.

Meanwhile, SSPCA president Datin Dona Drury-Wee pointed out that health, safety and rabies awareness are the utmost importance to all participants when the event is taking place.

“Participants bringing pets must ensure their animals are vaccinated against rabies and safe for public interaction,” she said.

“Part of the reason we organise this Pet Walk is to remind the public that rabies is still a threat. If your pets are vaccinated, you protect them and your family. Even a small scratch should not be ignored— you must take precautionary action and seek medical attention soonest,” Dona added.

The organisers aim to attract 1,000 to 2,500 participants in 2026, building on this year’s strong turnout.

“We want to encourage families to come out, exercise, and enjoy time together with their pets, and pets should be part of the family, not just for guarding or catching mice,” she enthused.

During the event, there will be vaccination booths for pets and public education on prevention of rabies and responsible pet ownership.

Among the programmes of that day include Top 10 Most Creative Pets & Owners Photo Contest, where members of the public can vote online for their favourite photos; Lucky Draws for all registered participants (everyone’s bib number will be entered) and photographers on-site to capture memorable moments between the participants and their pets.

“PKPK and SSPCA invite government agencies, NGOs, and GLCs to join the event. We have selected the specific date in conjunction with the World Stray Animal Day, underlining our commitment to animal welfare and community education,” Dona said.

Ahead of the Pet Run, the public can also visit SSPCA’s Christmas Bazaar at Dewan Masyarakat MBKS on December 7, 2025 to register for stalls or buy Christmas coupons. The Pet Walk 2026 registration can also be made on that day.

Also present during the press conference were International Marketing Management Sdn Bhd managing director, Foo Phang Chung, and the association executive committee, Chin Tze Pin.
