KUCHING: Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) must remain relevant in the face of global changes, including the rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI), said its president, Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

He highlighted the transformative impact of AI on various sectors, including politics, economics, and social structures.

He also stressed the need for PBB’s leadership to adapt and equip itself with technological knowledge to stay ahead in a fast-evolving world.

“AI has now become a phenomenon that is transforming human life. Who would have thought that President Donald Trump could deliver a Chinese New Year speech in the Sarawak language? Who would have thought? This technology is advancing rapidly and has various implications, including for Sarawak.

“We ourselves have introduced the Sarawak Government Virtual Assistant (AI) Dayang in the Service Sarawak application, which stores all important data and information about Sarawak and this technology serves the state’s best interests.

“The role of AI in the future is highly challenging as it will influence all aspects of the economy and society. The main question is: to what extent is PBB’s leadership prepared to master AI technology? AI is poised to create hybrid humans—a combination of man and machine. Are we ready to face this era?,” he said.

He said this when officiating at the PBB 16th Triennial General Meeting (TGM) at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) on Saturday (Feb 16).

Abang Johari further pointed out that while AI presents opportunities, it also poses risks if misused.

He warned about the dangers of AI-generated deepfakes, which could be exploited for propaganda.

“Imagine if AI is used to manipulate my voice and image to say, ‘Do not vote for PBB.’ Wouldn’t that be disastrous? Wouldn’t that undermine trust and political integrity?

“Even though I am a member of PBB, I would never say, “Do not vote for PBB.” But if AI can be programmed to say the opposite, it can be used to manipulate people.

“This is what we must be concerned about. Human greed and lust for power can lead them to use any means necessary. AI can be a very dangerous tool if misused,” said Abang Johari.

Therefore, he called for future leaders of the party to be prepared and understand the challenges ahead.
“We must have the technology to counter AI,” he added.
