Remains of fireman flown to Matu

SIBU: The remains of the fireman from the Water Rescue Unit (PPDA) of the Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) has arrived here yesterday evening.

The Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) CN235 RMF 494 (BODEVAC) flight departed from Subang Airport at 2pm carrying the remains of Yahya Ali, 24 arrived at Sibu Airport at 5.30pm.

The remains were then flown by a JBPM helicopter to Kampung Tian, Matu in Mukah for a funeral arrangement in his hometown.

During the incident, six firemen drowned while on a search and rescue operation for a 17-year-old teenager who had earlier fell into a mining pool in Taman Putra Perdana, Puchong.

Initial investigations suggested that the six firemen were swept away by strong currents.

All six firemen were immediately brought out and the medics performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) but it was too late. All six were pronounced dead at the scene.

The six firemen were attached to the water rescue dive team from Shah Alam and Port Klang fire station.

Present at Sibu Airport were Director of the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department, Khirudin Drahman and Political Secretary to the Chief Minister, Teng Ung Woo.
