MIRI: July 22 is the date that all Sarawakians should not forget. “It symbolises our freedom,” said Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) secretary-general Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew.

He opined that July 22 is regarded as Sarawak’s independence day and Sarawakians must appreciate the feeling of independence.

“This date, 56 years ago, Sarawak was granted independence from Britain and established a self-government.

“On July 22, 1963, we considered ourselves as being independent, whereby the first Sarawak Cabinet took control of Sarawaki,” said Ting when met at the launch of SJK(C) Chung Hua Tudan’s new school block.

He added that Sarawakians must look after this state and rally behind Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg in fighting for the state’s rights.

He also called on Sarawakians to maintain the peace and harmony in the state.

“The efforts to create awareness among young generation on the importance of July 22 have been made since the reign of the late Chief Minister Pehin Sri Adenan Satem.

“And it has been going on until today,” said Ting.

For SUPP Piasau Branch secretary Karambir Singh, July 22 serves as a good reminder to every Sarawakian that they have their own history and unique destiny.

“Sarawak Day distinguishes Sarawakians from the rest of Malaysia as a model of multi-ethnic and and multi-cultural society that lives in peace and harmony,” he said.

He added that the date should also act as a reminder to all Sarawakians to make strong collective efforts to always preserve and enhance the state’s positive features.

“I am happy to have been given the opportunity to contribute to Sarawak in various aspects and deem it  as an honour,” he said.
