SARIKEI: Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability, Datuk Seri Huang Tiong Sii said that the uniqueness of the Dayak people in Sarawak lies in their cultural heritage and rich traditions.

The Sarikei MP said that apart from being famous for their traditional longhouses, the Dayak community also possesses intricate and unique beadwork crafts, skills in weaving pua kumbu textiles, and expertise in making knives and machetes.

He added that the Dayak people are also renowned for their traditional customs and rituals, such as the Gawai Dayak festival, which celebrates the rice harvest and is an important event within the Dayak community.

“The spirit of unity and tolerance among the multi-ethnic society in Sarawak should serve as the best example to follow in Malaysia. By understanding and respecting the diverse customs, cultures, and beliefs of the various communities, we can live in harmony and mutual understanding,” he said.

He said this at the Pre-Gawai Programme officiated by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Patinggi Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi at Sarikei Central Halls here today (May 19).

Huang, who is also the Repok assemblyman, said that political stability is a crucial foundation for the country’s progress and prosperity, which not only attracts investors but also facilitates the government in implementing various planned development agendas.

He stressed that it is important as the government intensifies efforts to generate development so that its benefits can be enjoyed by the people.

“A strong partnership between the government and grassroots leaders can also help the government continue its development agenda for the people.

“The foundation of the country’s development does not rest solely on the shoulders of the government; people from various backgrounds and ethnicities also play their respective roles in realising this aspiration,” he added.
