KUCHING: A 27-year-old man was sentenced by the Sessions Court here today (Jan 21) to five years and three months’ imprisonment and one stroke of the cane for repeatedly abusing methamphetamine and amphetamine type drugs.
Judge Iris Awen Jon imposed the sentence on Robbie Pauler George Buda from Lundu after he pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, punishable under Section 39C(1)(b) of the same Act.
The court heard that the accused had two previous convictions under Section 15(1)(a) of the Act, dated Jul 28, 2025.
For the present offence, Robbie was found to have consumed the prohibited drugs again at the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department (NCID), Lundu District Police Headquarters, at about 1.30pm on Oct 13, 2025.
Under Section 39C(1)(b), a repeat offender faces a mandatory jail term of between five and seven years, and whipping of up to three strokes, upon conviction.
In addition to the custodial sentence, the court ordered Robbie to be placed under police supervision for two years upon completion of his jail term.
According to the facts of the case, police arrested the accused for suspected repeated drug abuse.
An initial urine screening test returned positive results, which were later confirmed by a laboratory report from the Pathology Department of Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) showing the presence of methamphetamine and amphetamine.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Chuah Kai Sheng conducted the prosecution. The accused was not represented by counsel.
