KUCHING: A man was sentenced to five years’ jail and one stroke of the cane by the Sessions Court here yesterday (Jan 27) for repeated drug abuse offences.
Noor Haizman, 42, pleaded guilty to consuming methamphetamine and amphetamine at the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department (NCID), Kuching District Police Headquarters (IPD), at 1.08 pm on February 9, 2023.
The court was told that Noor Haizman had two previous convictions for drug-related offences on September 30, 2019, and January 7, 2021, under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
Prosecuted under Section 15(1)(a) of the same Act, the offence carries a sentence under Section 39C(1)(b), which stipulates imprisonment of not less than five years and not more than seven years, and up to three strokes of the cane.
According to the facts presented in court, police arrested Noor Haizman after he was suspected of repeated drug abuse.
Initial urine screening tested positive for drugs, and laboratory analysis by the Sarawak General Hospital Pathology Department confirmed the presence of methamphetamine and amphetamine in his system.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Asmawi Nur Haqim Mokhtar handled the case, while Noor Haizman appeared in court unrepresented.
