KUCHING: A drug addict with multiple prior criminal records was sentenced to five years’ imprisonment, two strokes of the cane, and fined RM5,000 for repeated drug abuse as well as criminal intimidation after becoming upset when a family member refused to give him RM10.
In the first proceeding, Awang Masrah Awang Mustfa, 30, pleaded guilty before Sessions Court Judge Musli Abdul Hamid to repeatedly consuming amphetamine and methamphetamine.
Awang, who had previously been convicted twice under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act (DDA) 1952 in 2024, was again charged with committing the offence at about 8:30 pm on August 28, 2025, at the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department (NCID) office of the Kuching District Police Headquarters.
The latest charge was framed under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and punishable under Section 39C(1) of the same Act.
Awang is sentenced to five years in prison and two strokes of the cane for the offence.
Meanwhile, in the Magistrates’ Court, he pleaded guilty to two charges read before Magistrate Nursyaheeqa Nazwa Radzali.
For the first charge, he was charged under Section 506 of the Penal Code for threatening to cause injury to his elder sister.
For the second charge, he was charged under Section 427 of the Penal Code for damaging a bedroom door and window, causing losses amounting to RM1,000.
He committed both offences at a house in Kampung Sejingkat, Jalan Bako, at about 2:00 pm on May 29.
Nursyaheeqa imposed a fine of RM3,000 or 10 months’ imprisonment for the criminal intimidation charge and a fine of RM2,000 or seven months’ imprisonment for the mischief charge.
According to the facts of the case, the accused became aggressive and shouted inside the house on the day of the incident.
His sister, who was the complainant, reprimanded him after witnessing his behaviour.
However, the reprimand only made him angrier, prompting him to kick a bedroom door until it was damaged.
The accused also threatened to inflict serious harm on the complainant and other family members using a knife.
Fearing for their safety, the complainant lodged a police report, which led to the accused’s arrest.
Investigations revealed that Awang became enraged after his request for RM10 was denied by family members.
He also scattered items around the house and damaged the bedroom door and window, resulting in estimated losses of RM1,000.
The prosecution was handled separately by Deputy Public Prosecutors, Muhammad Aidil Akmal Sharidan and Asmawi Nur Haqim Mokhtar.
