KUCHING: Narcotics police tightened the noose on drug activities with the arrest of a local man and the seizure of suspected methamphetamine worth RM686 in Kampung Panglima Seman.
The 32-year-old was detained during an operation conducted by the district Narcotics Crime Investigation Division (NCID) at around 3.15 pm on Saturday (July 11).
Kuching police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu said a search of the suspect led to the discovery of 11 plastic packets containing suspected methamphetamine.
Both the suspect and the drugs weighing 6.24g with an estimated street value of RM686, were taken to the NCID office for further actions.
“Initial urine screening found the man positive for tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psychoactive compound in cannabis.
“Background checks also revealed that the suspect has two prior criminal records,” he said.
He has been remanded until July 16 to facilitate investigations under Section 39A(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
Upon conviction, the offence carries a prison sentence of up to five years and up to nine strokes of the cane.
Alexson said the successful operation was the result of continuous intelligence gathering and information provided by members of the public.
He assured that police would not compromise with anyone involved in drug trafficking as possessing, distributing or shielding drug-related activities are serious offences under the law.
