KUCHING: A local man with a history of offences was arrested for allegedly possessing suspected methamphetamine last Sunday (Nov 30).

The Sarawak Narcotics Crime Investigation Department (NCID) made the arrest in Kampung Semariang Jaya, seizing a plastic packet containing 5.30g of suspected methamphetamine, estimated to be worth RM583.

Initial urine test showed the 34-year-old suspect tested positive for amphetamine and methamphetamine.

Background checks also found that he has nine previous drug-related records.

The suspect is being remanded until Dec 3 to assist investigations under Section 39A(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which provides for a jail term of up to five years and up to nine strokes of the cane.

Police say they remain committed to combating drugs to safeguard both current and future generations.
