KUCHING: Police arrested a 51-year-old local man for suspected drug possession during a raid at a house in Stampin here yesterday morning (Oct 23).

The operation, carried out by the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Division (NCID) of the Kuching district police headquarters, led to the arrest of the suspect at 11.50 am.

Kuching district police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu said upon inspection, police found four transparent plastic packets containing a substance believed to be methamphetamine, weighing 5.30 grams and worth an estimated RM583.

“Initial urine screening on the suspect returned positive for amphetamine and methamphetamine,” he said in a statement last night.

He added that checks revealed the man has several previous criminal records under the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 — one under Section 39A(2), two under Section 39A(1), one under Section 12(2) and four under Section 15(1)(a).

“The case is being investigated under Section 39A(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries a jail sentence of two to five years and three to nine strokes of the cane upon conviction,” he said.

He said a remand application under Section 117 of the Criminal Procedure Code would be made today (Oct 24) to facilitate further investigation.

Alexson also attributed the arrest to continuous intelligence efforts and strong public cooperation, stressing that police will not compromise with anyone involved in drug-related activities.

“Drugs are the nation’s number one enemy and the NCID remains committed to combating drugs to protect current and future generations,” he said.

Meanwhile, the public with information on drug-related activities can contact the NCID Hotline at 012-2087222 or the Sarawak NCID Hotline at 017-5929211.
