KUCHING: Stampin MP Chong Chieng Jen has urged all representatives to distribute face masks to schools in their respective constituencies in efforts to curb the spread of the Wuhan coronavirus.

Yesterday, he distributed 950 face masks to students and staff members of SJK(C) Chung Hua Stapok with each individual receiving two masks.

“This will not be sufficient, but it is more of an awareness programme about personal hygiene and ways to reduce the spread of this coronavirus,” he told reporters after distributing masks at the school here.

“Children are among the high-risk groups. Thus, we hope that parents can play their part in facing this global crisis,” he said.

Chong said this was the first school in the Stampin area that they were distributing face masks to.

According to him, they are in the process of ordering 30,000 face masks to supply to all other primary schools in this area.

“If it is not sufficient, then we will increase the supply again,” he said.

The Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Deputy Minister said the distribution of face masks would also include government schools.

Chong expressed his hope that this programme would increase awareness among the public at large on preventive measures to be taken during this time.

Later, he also visited SJK(C) Chung Hua Syn San Too to distribute 450 face masks to the students and staff members there.

Another 450 face masks were provided to SJK(C) Chung Hua Batu Kawa as well.
