KUCHING: Fellow academics and researchers are encouraged to embrace community-based research, a research that not only advances knowledge but also uplifts lives.
Universiti Teknologi Sarawak (UTS) Vice Chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Khairuddin Ab. Hamid said when people co-create solutions with the those they serve, both researchers and the communities stand to gain.
“The true test of research lies not only in publication metrics, but also in how well our findings are communicated and implemented to solve real-world problems.
“Let this International Conference on Advanced Applied Sciences and Sustainability (ICAAS) 2025 a call to all scholars: go beyond the lab, beyond the classroom, and into the heart of the community,” he said.
He said this in his speech during the ICAAS 2025 launching ceremony at Raia Hotel and Convention Centre Kuching here today.
On ICAAS 2025, he added that the theme “Innovations in Applied Sciences for a Sustainable Future” is a powerful call to action to reimagine the role of science in building a resilient, inclusive, and green future.
“This theme resonates deeply with the vision laid out in Post-Covid-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS 2030), which envisions a digitally driven and environmentally responsible economy that places people at its centre,” he added.
Similarly, Sarawak Timber Industry Development Coorporation (STIDC) general manager Zainal Abidin Abdullah view the ICAAS as an important platform to broaden scientific and technological cooperation networks.
“We hope that all discussions, research, and innovations presented here can be practically applied in the transformation and sustainable development of Sarawak’s natural resource-based industries.
“Our aspiration is that, through the ICAAS agenda, we will stimulate the advancement of innovative knowledge and technology that can be effectively adopted by entrepreneurs and stakeholders in the forestry, timber, and environmental sectors of the state,” he said.
He said ICAAS 2025 proudly features a total of 75 paper presentations, comprising 14 wood-related, 14 food-related, 14 engineering-related, 10 online sessions, and 10 poster sessions, with participation including 13 video recordings from 67 local and 8 international presenters.
“In total, the conference is attended physically by more 140 participants, including both presenters and listeners.
“I urge all parties to continue working together to support efforts to protect and enhance Sarawak’s natural resources, so they remain progressive, sustainable, and competitive on the global stage,” he said.
