SIBU: An early Winter Solstice Festival, or Dongzhi Festival, celebration was hosted by the Village Security and Development Committee (JKKK) Kawasan Sg Parah at Paradom here on Sunday.

The event, co-organized by Kapitan Ting Siew Kiew, brought local residents together for a traditional activity: making “tang yuan” (glutinous rice balls). Ingredients for the festive food were also distributed to attendees.

Gracing the event as the guest of honor was Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Bawang Assan branch chairman Councillor Kevin Lau Kor Jie.

He expressed his joy at seeing the community gather and share in the celebration.

“As we come to the end of the year, winter solstice has always been one of the most important festivals celebrated by Chinese not only to mark the importance of reunion but also symbolising positive energy in the coming new year.

“I hope everyone will take this opportunity to prepare for winter solstice celebration which actual date falls on Dec 21 and I hope that any conflict or misunderstanding that occurred this year will be resolved with our reunion and collectively build an even more harmonious society,” said Lau, who is also SUPP Central Youth chief.
