BINTULU: Awareness and prevention remain key to addressing human-crocodile conflict, as the Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) intensified its outreach through the 3M Crocodile Education and Public Awareness Programme (CEPA) at SK Sungai Bukit Balai, Sebauh.

The programme which was held on Mar 31 recorded its highest participation in the Bintulu area to date, involving 28 preschool children, 198 primary school pupils, 48 Parent-Teacher Association (PIBG) members, as well as 16 teachers and school staff.

SFC said the strong turnout reflected a high level of commitment from both the school and parents in prioritising student safety, particularly in addressing risks related to human-crocodile encounters.

“Active involvement from teachers and strong support from the PIBG also highlighted growing awareness and concern over safety issues, with emphasis on preventive measures to avoid unwanted incidents,” it said in a recent social media post.

SFC said the programme was conducted by two speakers, with separate sessions tailored for parents and students to ensure more focused and effective delivery of information.

For preschool children, interactive activities including colouring sessions were incorporated to instil early awareness in a manner that is engaging and age-appropriate.

“Overall, the programme received positive feedback, with high levels of participation and effective dissemination of safety messages in line with the objectives of the 3M Crocodile (CEPA) initiative,” it said.

SFC added that this initiative forms part of ongoing efforts to educate communities on coexistence and safety practices in areas prone to crocodile presence.
