SIBU: Melanau-related associations and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) across Sarawak should be restructured to enhance their effectiveness and relevance.

According to Deputy Minister for Urban Planning, Land Administration and Environment Datuk Len Talif Salleh, while there are many such organisations throughout the state, some are no longer active.

“We need to revitalise these associations so they can help unify the Melanau community and, at the same time, engage with other ethnic groups to contribute to Sarawak’s development,” he said.

He said this when met by reporters after attending the Majlis Belanggar Meja hosted by the Sibu Melanau Association at a hotel yesterday (Apr 13).

Len also highlighted the importance of these organisations in preserving Melanau traditions, customs, and language — particularly among the younger generation.

To support this effort, his ministry is working with Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka to document Melanau vocabulary.

“Melanau culture is traditionally oral, not written, so much has been lost over time. That’s why it’s crucial to record and publish forgotten terms. Many young Melanau identify with the heritage but cannot speak the language,” he said.

He also expressed hope that a comprehensive Melanau dictionary will be developed to include the various dialects spoken in areas such as Rajang, Matu, Daro and Igan.

On the Sibu Melanau Association, he noted it is the oldest of its kind in Sarawak, now 67 years in existence.
