KUCHING: A retiree lost RM290,000 of her savings after falling victim to a part-time job scheme promising commission.

The incident happened in early June when the woman, in her early 60s, was added to a WhatsApp group named ‘Nookcha Production G15’ by an unknown individual.

She discovered that the group offered part-time job via online, and clicked on a YouTube link shared by the suspect named ‘Illi’, which offered RM15 for each click on the links.

Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Mancha Ata said the woman tried her luck and followed the instructions, receiving RM45 for three links from one ‘Henry Receptionist’ via Telegram.

Through ‘Mr Henry’, the victim was referred to Tan Cheng, who added her to a Telegram group named ‘723 VIP Working Group’.

“She was later instructed to perform several online tasks with the commission being supposedly paid to her later.

“On June 8, at 10.17 am, the victim was told to click on a link provided and follow the instruction to get her commission.

“Between early June and early July, the woman transferred RM290,000 into 11 different bank accounts via 18 transactions,” he said.

However, she realised that she was taken for a ride when the promised commission did not materialise.

The woman reported the incident to the police on Tuesday (July 30) and the case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating and dishonestly inducing the delivery of property.

Mancha reiterated his advise to the public to exercise caution and not be swayed by job offers promising lucrative commissions on social media.
