PONTIAN: A woman retiree lost RM108,000 after falling victim to a non-existent online share investment scheme last March.
Pontian district police chief Supt Hadzrat Hussien Mion Hussain said the 61-year-old woman had dealings with an individual offering a share investment package from a company, promising returns of 80 per cent on the investment amount.
“Attracted by the offer, the victim made several transactions into a company account from March 11 until last Friday, totalling RM108,000,” he said in a statement today.
However, the victim suspected she had been scammed when she was asked to make additional payments for any withdrawal of profits displayed on the application. She lodged a police report yesterday.
Hadzrat Hussien said the syndicate’s modus operandi began with the victim being added to a WhatsApp group with the suspects’ accomplices, who posed as investors and acted as if they were new participants joining the investment.
He said conversations in the group only explained the investment procedures, and the victim was later persuaded to join following false testimonials from syndicate members posing as investors who claimed to have received multiple-fold returns. – BERNAMA
