KUCHING: A retiree in his 50s learned a costly lesson after losing RM200,000 to a job scam, and only receiving a mere RM500 in return.

Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Mancha Ata said the victim was browsing Facebook in mid-March when he stumbled upon an irresistible part-time job offer from an unknown individual.

“Enticed by the promise of high commissions for simple tasks, the victim reached out to the suspect via WhatsApp to learn more about the opportunity,” Mancha said in a statement .

Over the next two weeks, the victim made multiple online transfers amounting to RM200,000, believing he was investing in a legitimate job.

“But reality hit hard when, after all that money spent, he received just RM500 in commission,” Mancha added.

Realising he had been scammed, the victim finally lodged a police report.

Mancha urged the public to be cautious of too-good-to-be-true online job offers and to verify any company or website before making financial commitments.
