KOTA SAMARAHAN: The revitalisation of public green spaces here gained fresh momentum with the launch of a RM500,000 landscape enhancement project at Unicentral Recreational Park.
The initiative is part of the town’s broader vision to develop into a sustainable, liveable and community-centred urban environment.
Led by the Kota Samarahan Municipal Council (MPKS) and financed by the federal government through the National Landscape Department, the project is the second of its kind to be implemented in recent weeks, the first being at Taman Desa Ilmu.
Deputy Minister of Rural and Regional Development, Datuk Rubiah Wang, said the works are expected to be completed within four months.
Once finished, the project will enhance the park’s functionality, safety and visual appeal across its five-acre expanse.
“Although the park already has basic landscaping in place, it currently lacks the vibrancy and comfort that would allow it to be fully enjoyed by the community. Through this upgrade, we aim to cultivate a more welcoming, healthier space that supports public well-being and encourages community activity,” she said.

Key upgrades include extending the existing pedestrian and jogging path from 500 to 600 metres and installing street lighting, thereby allowing the park to be safely utilised during both daylight and evening hours.
Given the park’s strategic location within an education zone that includes major institutions such as Unimas and UiTM, Rubiah stressed the importance of ensuring recreational facilities remain inclusive and accessible to students, residents and the wider population.
Looking ahead, MPKS is planning a second phase of landscape development that will explore the potential of other public spaces, including Halaman Samarahan and nearby lakeside areas.
“This park is not only intended for the benefit of local residents. It can also serve as a vibrant venue for non-governmental organisations and community groups to organise activities such as group fitness sessions, charity runs and local events,” she added.
Rubiah also praised MPKS for its sustained commitment in securing both federal and state funding to support the beautification of Samarahan, aligning with its growth as a modern township.
“Our ambition is to see Samarahan thrive not only through improved infrastructure, but through green, clean and inviting landscapes that enhance the overall quality of life,” she said.
In addition, she highlighted the importance of preserving traditional communities, citing plans to develop and conserve villages such as Kampung Muara Tuang, Tanjung Bundong and Sindang.
These efforts, she explained, are aimed at achieving a balance between urban expansion and the safeguarding of cultural heritage.
“These plans are already underway. While funding has yet to be finalised, we are identifying potential projects to be submitted under relevant state agencies. This includes a proposal to extend the development of Kota Samarahan Courtyard towards Ferry Point,” she explained.
