SEREMBU Assemblyman, Miro Simuh, has called for a bold strategy to revitalise Sarawak’s ruminant industry and proposed the integration of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles into the national education system to nurture a responsible, future-ready generation.

Miro emphasised the urgent need to boost Sarawak’s ruminant self-sufficiency, which currently stands at less than 20 per cent.

“In my view, the development policy for the ruminant industry in Sarawak should prioritise increasing productivity, reducing import dependence, enhancing genetic management, and improving farmers’ incomes,” he said.

He made these remarks while debating in support of the motion of appreciation for the Head of State Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar’s speech in the August house today.

Miro urged the Sarawak Government to allocate a larger budget under the 13th Malaysia Plan (RMK-13) to strengthen the sector, aiming to meet at least 50 per cent of local market demand in the near future.

He also called on the Department of Veterinary Services Sarawak (DVSS) to lead efforts to improve livestock genetics and expand local breeding by importing high-quality cattle and goat breeds, supported by government financial assistance.

“To reduce reliance on imports, it is equally important to produce animal feed locally.

“I encourage the government to provide incentives for investors to establish feed factories in Sarawak,” he added.

Miro further advocated for accessible technical training, technology transfer, and modern farm management courses tailored for both small-scale and commercial livestock farmers.

“These measures are crucial to ensure that during Hari Raya Aidiladha, the people of Sarawak have sufficient cattle and goats for sacrificial purposes at affordable prices,” he remarked.

Shifting to the education sector, Miro proposed embedding ESG values into the national curriculum from an early age to cultivate ethical, resilient, and globally-aware citizens.

“Incorporating ESG principles at the school level is a strategic step towards shaping a future generation equipped to face global challenges,” he explained.

He emphasised that with strong government policy support, institutional collaboration, and the effective use of digital technology, the ESG agenda can be successfully implemented.

“With clear policy direction, cooperation among educational institutions, and digital tools, I am confident ESG education will be effectively realised,” Miro said.
